Camping in Nelson County

4/28: Cooler Temps & Rain Showers: Look for temps to only be in the 60’s today—high 60’s in the valley and only at about 60 in the mountains. Rain showers move in later today and stay for the next week. For the full, local weather report, visit www.NelsonCountyLife.com

Camping in Nelson County

I have received many questions about camping in Nelson County and requests for information. There are camp areas for both tents and RV’s in Nelson County. We visited two of them yesterday. I will say that both campgrounds were packed with leaf-viewers. Make a reservation.

Both of the below campgrounds are near the Blue Ridge Parkway and Crabtree Falls.

Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort
When we visited yesterday, a Virginia ski club had rented one of the large cabins and were having a great time. The campground was full of RV’s and tents on nice, flat camping sites. RVs of all sizes were at this campground. Many were fishing in this campground’s private lake. This is a lot of fun, bring your fishing pole.

Here is information from the campground:

Located atop the Blue Ridge Mountains, there are 4 cabins available year round. The Pioneer Cabin is an 1800's log cabin with a fireplace and loft; the 7 Ridges Cabin has gas log fireplace, a loft and a beautiful view of the mountains from the large front porch; our 2 Mountain View Cabins also offer a wonderful view of the mountains. These 4 cabins are fully furnished and will sleep 6 people. Our Lakeview Cabin (available April - October) is located on our 4 acre lake and similar to a camping cabin which sleeps 4 people. There is camping, fishing and a country store. Located on Route 56, 3.5 miles east of the Parkway (MP 27). 10572 Crabtree Falls Highway, Montebello. 540-377-2650.

Crabtree Falls Campground
We think that this campground is better suited for tent camping. Some of the best tent sites are off the road and next to the Tye River. This campground is open year-round and is great for hikers. If you have a large RV, please contact the campground about size limits.

Here is information from the campground:

Just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, on the Tye River near Crabtree Falls, highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. Options for tent, RV or camping cabins. Camp store, heated bath-house, a washer and dryer & recreation room. Open year round. Reservations recommended. Near Wintergreen, Oak Ridge Estate, wineries and orchards. 11039 Crabtree Falls Highway, Tyro. 540-377-2066

Nelson County also has many private cabins for rent. For a list of private cabins, visit my Blog Archive at www.ExperienceNelsonCounty.com
